The nature of protest…

Climate change has been a hot topic for a number of years around the world. In New Zealand this week, Māori in the North Island took provocative action to try and stop what they believe is damaging to the environment and their iwi’s future.

Raihania Tipoki and a team from Greenpeace had a simple message for the Amazon Warrior – get out!

The Amazon Warrior is the biggest siesmic blasting vessel in the world.

Tipoki is speaking on behalf of 80 hapū in Ikaroa Rawhiti.

Māori TV spoke to a number of people about their concerns.

RNZ also covered the event which included a 60,000 strong petition delivered to the ship via an open letter read over the radio.

Captain Tipoki said “If we are to stem climate change, indigenous philosophies about how to fit in with nature and not expect nature to fit in with us must be re-adopted.”
